Soundtrack for the Shift: Soaking Up Late Summer on DS106 Radio
August is kind of a weird month. It starts, and most of us are in full Summer mode. We’re focused on barbecues, swimming, and Summer vacations. Then, before you can say “fire me up another hot dog there, Smitty,” mid-August arrives and smacks us upside our golden, sun-kissed heads with the realization that somewhere in the background the machinery of the academic year has already started turning.
While you’re relaxing poolside with that ice-cold margarita, college professors are typing out their new syllabi and students are finalizing their upcoming schedules. Like the toppings on your nachos compuestos, notifications about the upcoming semester are piling up in your inbox, and we’re all slowly remembering that the leisurely pace of Summer has an expiration date.
We still have time, though! So before we all dive back into the semester shuffle, let’s have some fun.
On Tuesday, August 18, I’ll be taking part in DS106 Radio Summer Camp, Reclaim’s 12-hour live radio event featuring music, games, storytelling, and open conversations. I’ll be jumping on the air at 4:00 PM EST for a DJ set built around this strange little stretch of time we’re in when Summer is winding down and the academic year is just around the corner.
There will be songs about Summer, songs that sound like Summer, a few songs that have absolutely nothing to do with Summer but somehow belong in the playlist anyway, and probably at least one questionable transition.
Ultimately, a good soundtrack makes any transition a little easier, and the DS106 Radio Summer Camp is just that - a wonderfully organic online gathering built to bring people together. It’s an open space to hang out, share music, share ideas, tell stories, and make the internet feel a little more human and personal. So, tune in for a bit next Tuesday and reclaim a little bit of time to enjoy one of these last few lazy Summer afternoons!
